The Asbury Park Fire Department responded to the initial box alarm at approximately 12:20 a.m. Monday, March 3, after receiving reports of flames coming from a window, the Wanamassa Fire Company said.
The building was identified as the former Holy Spirit Church on Second Avenue off Main Street, by NJ Advance Media. One person was rushed to the hospital from the scene with injuries, the outlet said citing Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy.
Upon arrival, first-due companies found heavy fire conditions throughout the structure, the Wanamassa Fire Company stated.
Fire crews worked together to battle the flames, as firefighters fought to contain the fire and prevent further spread, the Wanamassa Fire Company stated.
Firefighters remained on scene for approximately five and a half hours before being released by incident commander 8368, the Wanamassa Fire Company said.
The response included members of the Asbury Park Fire Department, Asbury Park Professional Firefighters Local 384, Long Branch Fire Department, and Neptune Fire Department, the Wanamassa Fire Company stated.
Authorities have not yet released information on the cause of the fire or any potential injuries.
